Well it depends on how long the essay is.
A typical one should consist of an Introduction (1)..
A body..which is 3 paragraphs (2,3,4)
And a conclusion...which is 1 paragraph. (5)
So i would say...5.

How long is your essay. A Paragraph is a topic. Lets I going to write an essay on the importance of coffee in the morning. (main topic) One paragraph might be about the smell of coffee and how it gets me moving. (Sub topic) The next paragraph will be on the effect of caffeine on the human body. (Sub topic). The thrid paragraph will be on the role coffee plays in conversation over the breakfast table.

Each paragraph should only contain sentences relating to one sub-topic on your essay. The amount of paragraphs you have in a essay will change depending on how many arguments you have to raise and the Length of the essay.

The basic simple model for essays for 500 to 1000 word essays is the five paragraph model. First paragraph is your introduction, and you thesis. Paragraph two is your first sub topic or argument. Paragraph three and four are similar to to paragraph two. Your last paragraph is the conclusion.

Use the above as a template, not a rule in Post secondary. As you become more comfortable writing essays you will expand and play with this model.

I hope this helps

You need three things:
1) Introduction with a thesis paragraph (if you don't know what this is, look it up on wikipedia).

2) A body, supporting that thesis.

3) Conclusion, which restates your thesis.

Intro and conclusion are usually one paragraph, with the body being as long as you want. I don't think there's a specific number of paragraphs you need; it depends on how long each paragraph is. Essays can be anywhere from 1 page long, to 10 pages long or more, so the number of paragraphs vary.

As many as you need to flesh out your argument. Traditionally, a basic essay should have a topic with at least three supporting elements each of which would have three supporting points. but then that is like essay writing from high school as I remember it in my advanced years. Just start a new paragraph with each new assertion then support your assertion.

Study Skills, Essay Writing.

As the essay paper has evolved it has become more demanding with much more emphasis on posing questions which allow candidates to display the higher order skills. Professor Roy Wilkinson of Sheffield University has identified a pyramid of skills which A level examinations try to test.

The essay map, an optional part of an essay's introduction, is often a helpful tool for writers and is sometimes a useful guide for readers. Fundamentally, an essay map is a listing of the major reasons, arguments, causes, or effects that will be discussed in the essay. At first, this notion may sound too "clunky" to be useful. For instance, if a writer provides readers with the following sentences...

at least 4.
Your first paragraph should cover all the points briefly. Then develop each paragraph after that with a sentence from the first one. Try to keep each paragraph to no more than two points.
Finally, summarize in your final paragraph.
