I think part of the problem is that schools are pushing kids to the computer. Penmanship is no longer necessary because all that matters is how fast you type. I think this is a catastrophe. We are raising a generation of children who barely know how to legibly write their own names.
While computers have made everyone's lives easier, I do not believe they should have more that a minimal place in grades K - 5. This is when you need to be learning the skills for the rest of your life, such as math and proper language skills. Reliance on a calculator is a terrible thing and children today are not learning how to remember anything, but how to look everything up. (or ask people here to answer for them.)
As an aside, it amazes me how many kids are on here asking about basic algebra. They do not know how to challenge themselves at all. There is no drive to become better. They all want the easy way out.

Q; Has the world lost touch with its ability to read and write?
Yes. The revolution (against rational thought and discipline) began long time ago, and no one resisted. TXT-type feels so good, and today, it's all about "feeling good". Discipline is difficult, and it "hurts" to practice it, so it must be bad. Thinking is difficult. Thinking is bad.
Q: Where is all the grammar and spelling?
Spell check and grammar check are built-in features because there's no market for such add-ons --not for any price.
We like ***pictures*** most of all.
Television/Cable/Dish.
Youtube.
iPod video
School? "School" is for "jobs": teach kids enough for them to get a job, and to avoid becoming public burdens. And since you can "get by" in the working world without spell-/grammar check, spelling and grammar are low-priority knowledge.
Most important are adding numbers of up to 7 digits and 2 decimal places (e.g., $1,000,000.00) and multilplying numbers with 4 decimal places (e.g., 0.0699 as in 6.99% APR). At least you should know how to punch those numbers into a calculator.
And this:
Revenue - Costs = Profit
Q: Don't they teach the difference between a "?" and a "." anymore?
It is taught, but it is not learned. Those are two different symbols that have been rendered unnecessary by our inability to listen. We don't have to know whether a sentence is a statement or a question, we just have to talk talk talk talk talk talk.... Politicians and celebrities talk this way. Your question will not be answered directly, because they do not want to answer it, cannot answer it, or have something else (something "more important") to say.
Q: AND DOESN'T ANYONE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR AND YOU'RE?! THEIR, THEY'RE, AND THERE!??!?!
They sound the same. Isn't that all that matters? "Oh, you know what I mean."
Q: What is this world coming to?
Our journey to the dark side is nearly complete.
The Matrix *is* real.
The Matrix *can* tell us who we are.
The medium is the message. (McLuhan)
Image is everything. (Agassi)
If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad. (Crow)
The future is foresaken. (Acclaim video game)
>I think someday we will all just be illiterate idiots, and I certainly hope I die before then.
I'm with *you*.

IMHO, there are four prime culprits.
1. Multiple Choice tests.
2. No child left behind.
3. Misuse of computers by students and teachers
3. 24/7, sit on your butt, watch and listen entertainment.
An aside: I have yet to find a word processor with a really accurate grammar checker. However, my daughter is told her homework must be typewritten and apparently if the program doesn't catch the grammar errors, neither does my daughter or her teachers.

In addition to grammatical correctness I bet you believe in political correctness.
The net is not the place for grammar, it is the place for communication. So what if the grammar doe not meet your high standards of correctness? Language is a living thing and hopefully all the grammatical errors will eventually redefine English spelling and grammar into something more manageable.

You should try typing for a doctor who thinks he knows grammar and he actually does not. I have to take the dictation and put it into my head and then make a sentence out of it.
