At that age, always go with clothes. The kids are too young to know the disappointment that comes with receiving clothes as a present, but their parents will love you! I always include baby sized hangers to hang the clothes on, tons of socks because if the kid doesn't dip their heels in a dirty diaper then the damn things get lost in the laundy because they are so tiny. Onesies and little comfortable bottoms. Nothing expensive and too fancy that they may never wear. Always sensible everyday clothes. But include one or two cute outfits for outings (like a doctor's appointment) and clothes that are easy to take off (especially for doctors appointments). And include a nice soft stuffed animal that has no parts the kid could choke on.

Stacking cups/rings, blocks, link beads, any of the /fisher Price Brilliant Basics stuff. Plat tables are fun, balls, they even like plastic dishes and utensils to play with :)

My daughter is the same age and I'm getting her a gloworm doll, a soft doll, a cabbage patch, a ride on/push car, Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Puppy OR piggy bank, 3 outfits and some pyjamas

My baby will also be nine months old at Christmas. We are planning on getting her a Leap Frog Baby system and either a TMX Elmo (she loves to watch toys that move and will LAUGH uncontrollably for a baby) or one of the Tiggers that bounces on his tail. I'm sure she will get other loot too...

I have no idea what the grandparents are getting her though.

I'm really hoping for gift cards myself.

She'll be just as interested in the boxes and wrapping paper at this age.

Board books

Savings bonds

Buy a new ornament for the tree for her each year. When she is grown she will have a nice collection for her own home and each will have a memory of her childhood attached to it.

A nice outfit that you can use for her 12 mos pix or to wear on Christmas Day.

A special blanket with her name and birthdate on it.

One of the best presents my daughter got when she was about that age was a big book of stories to read aloud. Bedtime stories are a lovely way to end the day and help both parent and child unwind.
The one we have is: The Hutchinson Treasury of Stories to Read Aloud (Hardcover)
by Various, Janet Schulman (Editor)

Shape sorters or wooden lift out puzzles are good - my daughter got interested in stuff like that at around that age....
VTech toys are always a bit of a winner too

Check out the Early Learning Centre - they have loads of brilliant things in there

I got my niece a Christmas oranment with her name and the year on it for her first Christmas. (And it actually matched her room - it was a Noah's Ark looking one so it hangs in her room.)

Otherwise, clothes in the 12 months and older size - something to grow into.

For your child = clothes. Seems that kids are always growing at that age.
Somebody else's child = gift card (walmart, target)

It seemed like at Christmas and Birthday we always received more than enough toys from people. We had to go and get the clothes and other misc things for our girls.
