you should see a doctor to determine if it is a viral or bacterial infection. if viral it will resolve it self with moist and meticulous cleansing from the inner eye to outer eye with separate tissues for each eye. wash your hands frequently. if it is bacterial your doctor will order antibiotics. that has to be determined by culturing the drainage.
pink eye is very contagious so you can infect others or keep reinfecting yourself if you do not maintain constant cleanliness of hands, etc.

There are two types of pink eye at least. One is a bacterial one very contagious and curable with antibiotics. The other kind is also contagious and is viral. The biggest difference is the type of discharge that makes you tell the difference. The one that is viral will go away without antibiotics but you should have the prescribed medicine for it so it won't spread to other people and last as long. Don't chance either one to just taking care of itself because it is very contagious. Once kids in school get it the teacher makes them go home and the only way they can get back in school is to be declared clear by a doctor.

Does Pink Eye Go Away

It should go away within 2-4 days without antibiotics, but I do recommend if you are trying to save money, buy a gallon of purified or distilled water and run it over your eye frequently, that will help with your eyes natural processes of eliminating outsiders(bacteria or free radicals) that don't belong. Hope this helps.

Also, be mindful that Pink-Eye is very contagious, so do not rub the eye and then rub the other eye with that hand and so on, especially if you are not treating it with antibiotics or you will spread it.

Bacterial pink eye is what gives you the gooey yellow crusty stuff, and that needs a prescription. Viral pink eye makes your eye turn pink, and you might have a watery clear discharge. That will go away on its own. You can get some homeopathic pink eye drops at a pharmacy over the counter (I've got them at Target before) to help with the itching. Viral pink eye can turn in to bacterial pink eye if it gets too irritated. Good luck!

you need to see a dr. There are many things that are generalized as pink eye ranging from viral infections, bacterial infections, to just eye irritation causing a pinkish red hue. Any of these conditions can be serious, without proper treatment you could lose your eye or eyesight.

Probably not. Unless it's not pink-eye and is an allergy. Don't mess around - pink-eye can get very nasty and it's highly contagious so wash your hands a lot and don't touch your eye area.

pink eye is not an emergency situation, but you should have it treated by an ophthalmologist, it is very contagious and uncomfortable! if you call an ophthalmologist office they will get you in for treatment withing a few days.
