You make a very good point! I think prisons should have television. It gives them something to do besides kill each other. If they just sit around doing nothing, you're talking about some bad stuff going down, there would really be bad stuff going down!!
Watching TV does make people more violent, and that is a proven fact. Studies have shown this to be true. It also has bad effects on young children, but they scream freedom of speech, so they can put any crap on there that they deem fit. I have seen a child watch a Ninja movie, and then they would be outside trying what they learned, on their brother or sister. I'm not sure it makes people paranoid, but that is within reason.
A lot of people may make the statement "They are there for punishment, and not luxury." I can agree somewhat, but what some have to understand, is not all prisoners are there because they are guilty. The prisons are full of young people who (for some reason or the other) got caught up in something they couldn't avoid. In short; all people in prisons are NOT bad people. I can assure you, they are just like the people out in the streets, and many of them are there because they made a mistake. Nobody is perfect! I believe with all my heart, that most prisioners are from the poor sector of society, and many people that are in the streets just haven't gotten caught. Being locked up in a cell, and not having your freedom is punishment enough. They watch TV everyday, and see just what they are missing out on, and they think about what they did the whole time. You don't see rich kids in prison!! I think IF they made it part of their sentence requirments to get an education while there, over half of them could be productive, and could have means of making it in society. A prisoner CAN be reformed, and can become model citizens, if given the tools to do it with. There is a few that there is no hope for, and belong locked away forever. One would be suprised at how many prisoners are mental patients, and belong in a mental facility. Many like it there, and had rather be inside than outside, because they just can't make it in society. So yes you have a very good question, and I hope I have been able to touch the way people think about prisoners, because it could be your brother, sister, mom, or dad that is behind those bars. They need help, and the prisons are overflowing because society thinks they need to be put away, and don't give much thought to how much those prisoners cost the taxpayers each day. The cost is staggering, and there has to be a better way.
I hope I have opened some eyes. Good Luck!!!

No prisons should not have televisions. Television is a luxury that we have, and prisoners should not have any luxuries since they are being punished. However I don't think that watching TV makes people more violent, if somebody is violent that's just the way they are, people were violent before the invention of the television so... Paranoid, maybe, I think the news can sometimes make people a little paranoid.

I'd have to say that no, prisons shouldn't have televisions, but not for the reason you're implying.

These people are in prison because they did something wrong. There's no reason why they should get to watch TV, or do anything else entertaining.

I would not agree with the statement that you should pull TVs from prisons simply because you're worried about violence or paranoia. For one, over half of the prison population is in there because of violent crimes; adding TV to the mix isn't going to make them "more violent." And for another, TV, video games, etc. do not "make" people violent. Violent tendencies have been around since the dawn of man---long before TV. In every era, people have the choice to commit violent crimes. It's their choice. Blaming TV or video games or any other catalyst is just a way of trying to reason why violence happens. God forbid people accept personal responsibility.

no they should have televisions or be allowed to watch them. what punishment do most adults use to children - no tv !or people use tv as a treat for kids. why should they be allowed to watch tv - they are in prison for breaking the law - they are not there for a holiday or time out! they have done things so bad they are locked away to teach them a lesson and to keep society safe.
yes i do think tv can make people more violent or paranoid but its not the reason i think they shouldnt be allowed to watch it.

Next time your arrested for being suspicious, or suspected of being annebriated, then you can say NO TV. Just because someone is in Jail does not mean they are actually guilty of a crime. And roughly 20% of Inmates are in for Non Violent Crimes. They cheated taxes,or had some pot, sank a car and tried to claim insurance, these people aren't mean or violent, yet. So let em watch some broadcast TV. Maybe even allow them to read a newspaper.

that is kind of a stupid question . if you have 2,00 people locked up for causeing problums what are you going to do with them to keep them from being more violent? you can't turn them loose in public. you can't trust most of them , they are there for a reason . and that reason is mainly to protect the general people . but you also must remember there is alot of people in prison that is not guilty . they are there only because the hjudge or sociaty wants them there. i know a man right now that is serving 30 year'd for a crime he did not do . the d.n.a. proved he is not guilty. there was no match . yet the judge sent him there . because of who his family was . they wanted to make an example of him. t.v. is mainly a way to keep the prisoners quite . sure some of them can learn a trade while there. get out on a work detail. but the most of them can't leave the grounds

I feel that TVs should not be in the Jails.

TV does not make anyone more of anything unless they are already willing or have the predisposition to that action/reaction. Just like video games and other forms of entertainment.

Violence is a learned reaction to a set of stimuli. Paranoia is a mental defect that can be exacerbated by what is perceived and understood in the twisted thought of the sufferer.

And before anyone gets on me over the paranoia, I have a friend who suffers from it.
