When I import a Mini-DV tape using iMovie, it takes up more than 12 gigabytes on my hard drive. I'm not worried about running out of space on the computer, but I was hoping to fit a whole tape on one DVD, or there-abouts. One tape would fill three discs! Is there a way to downsize the file size? Any help is greatly appreciated- I am disappointed!

12GB is what a full sized, uncompressed movie would take up. With whatever program you're importing the movie with, see if there are options to import and resize/compress it.

No you can not. The VHS adapter is for VHS-C tapes. Even if you somehow found a way to get a miniDV tape into a VHS adapter, you still have to reprogram the VCR to understand the miniDV tape. Video saved to miniDV is saved in a different format than video saved to VHS-C. You only have 3 options. The quickest is to connect the camcorder directly to the TV via the cord with the 3 RCA plugs (yellow, white, red). If your tv is older and does not have these RCA connections (and only a cable connection), you can connect to your camcorder to your VCR, DVD player, and sometimes your cable box and send the video in that way. You can also go to Wal-Mart and purchase an RF adapter/modulator that will convert RCA input to cable. The camcorder will then become the VCR for the miniDV tape. You can also connect the camcorder to a VCR or a console DVD burner with the same cord. You can then copy the movie to a DVD or to a VCR. There will be no loss of quality of the movie on DVD. There will be some loss of quality on VHS tape, but it won't be so much that it is an issue. The third option is a bit longer but will be more user friendly in the long run. You will need to connect the camcorder to a computer via Firewire. You can then capture the video to your computer with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie. The video can then be edited and saved. Then you can use a DVD burning program such as iDVD to burn your movie to a DVD-R. The DVD-R can then be used to view the movie at any time. If you need to make changes in the future, you can adjust the edits and then re-export a new movie.

It takes 12GB because it is stored in the "DV" format that is close to uncopressed video, DVD's use the MPEG-2 Compression. The process to compress a video into mpeg is called transcoding, there are countless progs out there that do it... DO NOT change the frame rate!
