Its call the art of Persuasion. In other words you know your subject well enough to give your side of the story. However in some cases no matter what one says you will not change the others mind and they may not even acknowledge your point what so ever and that's just a lost cause..

All you can do is state your case. At least that way they know what you believe or how you feel, and then just be satisfied with that. The other person's position is for them and only them to change. It kind of goes along with the following joke:
How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?
One, but the light bulb has to want to change.
NOTE: If you still can't accept them not agreeing with you, then knee-cap them and move on.

You can still argue with someone even if you have no hope of changing their mind. And haven't YOU made up your mind about things many many times? How would you like it if someone kept trying to change YOUR mind? You can't win them all. If it's THAT important to make them change their mind, threaten them or bribe them.

No one can reason with someone who had made up their mind. When you think of it, we are all like that a few times in our life. Just try to be quiet so things would not heat up.

Just help that person to shed his attachment with his own self, even if for a while..
Suggest to him, to help you with an attempt to look at the arguement from your point of view , in order to find out where you went wrong in erroneous judgement within yourself... Maybe he would be persuaded to 'step into your shoes' and think, and in the process, may 'inadvertently' re-assess his own 'pre-judice' !

Thinking always faster than action. If one love to speak out; either way one lose confidence wants more output to demotrate. will not influence your thinking idea. But with a humble heart and be patiented to listen what one try to express then you know what is good and what is bad.

I like to start off with something they do agree to make them think you're really on their side...then slowly adjust the temperature...if you do it right they'll never noticed until they're already boiled. Good Luck. Teaching is more art than science.

Don't. You do not have to agree with them but if they have already formed an adamant opinion then the debate is a pointless exercise. If it comes to it, vote with your feet and walk away.
I've done it before and will do it again, it keeps me sane.

There's no point.
It's much the same as answering god botherers in the R&S forum here. They have a fixed idea of how things are and won't listen to counter arguments.

if they are a s/o or parent, just tell them what they want to hear. ironically, many ppl ask questions, and already have an answer in their minds.. people who arent willing ot learn or listen to a new idea arent worth trying to educate. leave them be.
