Has there ever been an instance where someone pitted a professional sports league against a college team? For instance, put a poor performing NFL team against a very good college team. I always wondered how a bout like that would turn out!

Back before the mid-70s, there would be a game during the summer that would pit college players who had graduated and had been drafted or were looking to get picked up against the winner of the Super Bowl. If memory serves, the last game of this sort was played against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The reason given for discontunuing the games was that the college players had been drafted and the possibility of them being injured was too great. Seems Jack Lambert hammered the snot out of a couple of diva running backs. But I would guess that the worst NFL team could beat the NCAA football champion. The pros are just too big and too fast. The reason why a team like the Cleveland Browns looks so bad is because they play the best. But they'd destroy USC or Ohio State. Same thing in tennis. One of the top male players once said that the 100th-ranked male player could defeat the #1 woman, and it wouldn't even be close. Sounds logical to me...

Not going to happen.

1. NFL team has nothing to gain and everything to lose.
2. NCAA would probably have a cow and try to penalize the school.
3. High risk especially in football of someone getting hurt if the actually played to win.
4. Any pro team would kill even the best college team.

yes, the NFL champion played a college team in the pre season way back in the early/mid 60s, I think it was a college all star team but it did happen, they stopped it before 1970 I think if I right remember the NFL would go easy on the kids and not run it up on them.

What's in it for the NFL owners ?

But, I would have morbid curiosity to see the worst NFL team play the college champions - far more fun than the All Star Game.
