How safe and reliable are generic AC adapters for notebooks?

i would not reommend using other than original adapter
matching volts and amps maybe fine for notebook, but sure not the battery charging circuit.
this is an intriicate affair, boost charge, trickle charge, no charge.,
the auto cut-off switch regulates this & i'm not sure the others are duely calibrated, if at all equipped with them !
the smps, if u'll notice is marked 100 - 250 volts input supply ... which indeed is a wide range
even desktop smps units have selector switch for 110 volts / 220 volts ac
only other manufacturer is targus & this i know cause i've seen a number of notebook manufacturers offer optional targus adapters
