Check the manual for oil specs, but I'd reccommend using a synthetic oil for that engine.

I have an 89 325is. I use 5w-20 in the winter and 10w-30 or 10w-40 in the summer, whatever is cheaper. I only use Castrol or Mobil1. Catrol is actually the recommended brand for BMWs from the factory. As long as you're not using super-cheap generic brand oils your car will be fine. Cheap oil has less tolerance for breakdown, which forms acid quickly and harms the inside of engines. If you feel adventurous enough, try using Mobil1 synthetic, but keep in mind you might get a small oil leak as a result. Synthetic oil is made up smaller, less dense molecules, so it might seep through semi-warn oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket.

If you are doing the Extended(15K) change intervals, you will need a very good synthetic oil. BMW High Performance Synthetic 5W30 oil is recommended. You could also use Amsoil European Formula which is what all of my MB and BMW customers use for the 13K-15K mile intervals and it doesn't cause any problems with the oil quality sensors.

BMW uses the 5W30 in alot of the engines.
Synthetic Mobil1 or Castrol seems to be the brand most dealers pump out of thier barrels

A search in your owners manual will answer this question.
Or search for the owners manual on Google.

I suspect it would be Castrol 5/30. But don't quote me.
