Because you do to others as you want done to you. They either hate you and are being nice too or you just hate them but you wouldn't want to be like "hope you have a horrible morning" or "f you" instead of hello. If you really hate someone that bad to where you can't even say a simple hello then you need some help. You need to let stuff go man, no need in being in rage and hateful when all it does is waste your time from being happy. I'd rather be happy anyday than angry or upset. Make the best of your life boy, chill out.

I think that perhaps we are just being courteous (respect for and consideration of others). It is actually a natural habit for us since this is something we've done from being taught to do so by our parents, I'm sure.

I think hate is a strong word and that perhaps we don't necessarily HATE anyone, just "despise" them or dislike them. In that sense, we may not want to subject ourselves to improper behavior and if greeted, we can spare a simple hello or good morning just out of respect for being an adult.

To me, faking it would be making actual "toasty" conversation with someone you do not really particularly care for. In business situations, we might have to do a 2 minute conversation and step away if it was unavoidable.

All in all, I think it is a good thing. Why belittle ourselves to someone else's level when we can easily just hold our heads high and BE respected instead of disrespectful? :)

I understand what your saying , it's just a matter of being civil and avoiding constant outright hating and constant bickering . We rise above the pettyness to show we are not bothered by these people we dislike . Fake yes it may be , a bad idea though , no I don't think so since we are doing it for ourselves .

I don't know, but I hate doing it. I especially hate it when people try to make pointless small talk.

Woman on the elevator: "Hi. I hate Mondays"
Me, in my head: "Okay, who the hell cares?"

i don't. If I don't like someone its for good reason so I'm not going to go out of my way to be nice. That's two faced. If you're big enough to be nasty behind someones back be big enough to be the same to their face.

I don't know. I think it is really lame. I try my hardest not to say anything to people I hate.
