Well, there ARE a lot of very rude people off-line, too.
But the anonymity and lack of consequences makes it easier to be rude in systems like this.
If you see a rude answer, you can click Report Abuse (or the flag widget), and submit an Abuse Report. Insulting other participants is a clear violation of the guidelines (as is not answering the question).
If the item is removed, the user is docked 10 points; really bad violators are banned from the site.
I suggest you and everyone reading this help the Yahoo staff get the rude replies off of this system.

Your post reminded me of a line from the movie "Steel Magnolias", (GREAT movie) where Clairee tells Wheeza "...you know, you'd be a kinder, more pleasant person if you found something to occupy your time." Wheeza yells in response "...I'm not mad, Clairee! I've just been in a very bad MOOD for 40 years!!!"
I really think there are people like that. They've been in a bad mood for so long, it just seems natural to them. Really though, I think there are all kinds of reasons for rudeness. Maybe the person is just having a bad day, or they're going through a very difficult period in their life. Maybe they just don't have much patience. Maybe they just hate their lives - who knows?
To me, it doesn't make much sense to visit Answers and just end up spewing out all kinds of crap, but that's what some people seem to like to do here. I'm sure they probably ARE like that in real life. It's kind of sad though, because I think life really is a blessing. Just that knowledge alone should be enough to bring a smile to someone's face.
Good question though. Have a good one!

personally, there's a few reasons why people are rude in their responces:
-they have no idea what they're talking about
-they have a chip on their shoulder- in this case,a "dummy complex"-where they know they DONT KNOW the answer and they get defensive(so why the h*** are they here at all?)
-they were in a similar situation before responding to yours(one of life's unnecessary CYCLES)
-they're just plain ignorant and stupid
-some people believe it or not, actually live by feeding on your energy.Parapsychologists call them 'psychic vampires'.
-they don't care what they say or how you'll react, they think just putting senseless, stupid replies means getting points and gets them AIRMILES or a free stuffed toy(usually in those real situations they didn't win any!)
*Bottom line is-no need to worry bout them or give them your energy. They are walking zombies or modern day cavemen.
That's the plain truth! ;o)

I hope not. On answers one can be more anonymous than in real life and some people choose to be more aggressive than usual. However, I think most people are showing their true selves with their comments rude or otherwise.

I think some people are also just soft, sensative people who don't get to be pricks a lot in real life cuz they are scared of the consequences so they come here and be pricks to people asking questions to make themselves feel better about their own real life cowardness.

I am sure they are. People are rude because they hate their own pathetic life. Dont read too much into rudeness. It usually has nothing to do with you.
