Yes they do for many reasons. The light will cause algae to form on the glass and plants (fake or real) the fish will eat some of the algae and the algae will help the natural bacteria that helps the fish stay healthy (not too much algae but just enough). Aslo, the fish need to feel as if there is day and night. Put a flourescent light on during the day and shut it at night.

Yes, fish do need light. Unless you are keeping a fish that lives in the bottom of the sea( not likely) then you want to try to reconstruct the fishes natural habitat as much as possible for optimum health. In the wild, fish, as well as most other living creatures experience day and night cycles. Cycles of rest and being awake. If you don't give your fish some sort of light at regular intervals, or if you give them constant light, you are disrupting their natural cycles. This can cause stress in your fish which in turn, sets them up get all sorts of diseases, parasite infections, etc. I have many years of experience with pets, and my advise would be to give your fish a light. Fluorescent bulbs grow less algea, and produce less heat than incandescent bulbs and are what I recommend. Sunlight is usually not recommended for aquariums. HTH

Yes, fish need light. Most aquariums come with one included. Besides a natural day/night cycle requirement, fish that don't have enough light can also lose their colouration.

Of course, light is necessary at least part of the time. This does not mean that they need a special or even a light above the aquarium but available sun light is essential to fish

Having a light will make the fish more active and help algae grow, all algae is not bad as it helps good bacteria grow as well, also it is a good thing for the fish to nibble on!

When i first bought my tank i got told you didnt need a light because in the wild they dont get much light anyway because they are at the bottom of the sea or big lakes etc. if you dont get one you can get filteration boosters that help increase bacteria and aslong as your feeding them they wont miss the algea.

This is not from personal experience as i have a light but that is what they said at the pet shop. They also said not to have a light on for more than 6hrs a day or you tank will be overrun with algea because it will grow quicker.

hope that was usefull

DEFINATELY NOT! IT IS JUST THERE FOR "COSMETIC" REASONS,SO PEOPLE CAN SEE THEIR FISH AT NIGHT. FISH DO NOT REQUIRE LIGHT 24 HOUR'S OF LIGHT. NOW,JUST THINK ABOUT THIS,... IF FISH NEEDED LIGHT 24 HOUR'S 7 DAYS A WEEK, IT WOULD COST THE MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES "ALOT OF MONEY" TO INSTALL LIGHT'S OVER "ALL LAKES AND RIVER'S " JUST IN ONTARIO, LET ALONE ALL OF THE LAKES AND RIVERS OF CANADA.
