I play the clarinet and I know people that play trombone. I have to say that both seem very enjoyable. I love the clarinet though.
If you are carrying it to and from school the clarinet is smaller so it is less to carry. The clarinet also has a variety of tones and pitches that it can reach. It can go really high and really low.

I hear the trombone is very hard to play. I played the clarinet in middle school and really liked it. I actually started with the snare drum, but one day we had a substitute music teacher and we all switched instruments and tought each other a couple of notes and beats to fool the sub. Turned out, I liked the clarinet better! And the sub teacher was none-the-wiser!

TROMBONES! I have been a trombone player in the band for 3 years, and it is awesome! You really get to love it, and hey the only thing you have to worry about is the cheap slide oil, whereas clarinet you're always buying reeds. Great Investment GO TROMBONES!

I prefer trombone over clarinet.

clarinet is lighter to carry. and you will be carrying it a lot.
clarinet needs reeds, so you have to replace them.
I personally prefer trombone because of the sound.
but i love the oboe even more than that, and the clarinet could
lead to the oboe later...or bass clarinet or any number of things.

Trombone are less expensive to maintain.... Clarinets require repadding and reeds and more skill with the mouth to be able to play correctly and in pitch.
