if she buys meals of X$,
then tax is 0.07X, tips is 0.15X
So X + 0.15X + 0.07X = 30
or 1.22X = 30
or X = 24.59$

The maximum price Linda can pay for her meal is $23.40
After paying 7% tax which is $2.10
and after paying 15% tip which is $4.50
she is left with $23.40

The 7% tax is on the food bill the 15% tip is on the total ie food + tax

Call the total highest food bill x

food cost + 7%tax + 15% tip = $30

x + (7x)/100 + 0.15(x + (7x/100)) = 30

After a little bit of magic transposition work

x=$24.38

The answer given by charlie is correct. Some folks didn't consider that the tip is based on the food cost plus the tax.

tax = x*7/100
tip = x * 15 /100

30 = x + 7x/100 + 15x/100 => 30 * 100 = 100x + 7x + 15x = 122x
x= 3000/122 = 24.6 $

$24.39... and Linda better hope that her service isn't too, too great. 'Cuz if it is, that tip had better be 20%!!

Although, those Kodamas are all a little stingy... ;)

23.40

15+7%=22%
30 x .22 = 6.6
30 - 6.6 = 23.40

i dont know what the hell that other guy was talking about.
