But, on that soulless morning after, I longed for the tailback lined with festive queues.

Could you explain the meaning of this sentence?

I think it means that I was stressed on the lead-up to Christmas, but when it was all over, I wished it were Christmas again.

It sounds like part of a poem, so a literal translation will be confusing.

Some hints:
soulless = dull; without spirit or feeling.
festive = bright, cheerful, party-like
queues = lines of people waiting for something
tailback = football (sports) term

Possibly:
But, on the gray and dreary morning (after whatever day or event was mentioned in a previous line) I really wanted to see happy people everywhere.

I think you have to give us more of the text because we need to consider the context of the work.

Sounds like the author is trying to give an overly dramatic delivery describing a common football game that was lost.

Tailback is an offensive football position or a line of cars. Queues are lines of people things, etc.

It would help to have it in context. If it's a poem, what is the poem? If it's a story, how about the whole paragraph?

It sounds like he had a great time at a party of some kind and woke up feeling quite alone.

Here is my guess:

But, on that horrible and meaningless morning after the awful thing that happened (and that was somehow related to football), I wished everything was the same (probably) as it had been at the start of the book when we were standing in lines at the football game.
