Well -- it pretty much depends on where you are and how you define "Successful career."
If you are a rice farmer in the middle of a sparsely populated sectionof China -- then English may not be too important to your career. If you are doing anything in an English speaking country or want to do anything in international business -- then not knowing English will hinder your success.

I don't understand your question. Why would you think that communicating in English is not necessary for a successful career? Well, even if you are in one of the China provinces, being fluent in English is still an advantage.
Right. Perhaps it may not be "necessary", but I would say it would still be important to be equipped with the language in the long run - if you want to ride with the waves of globalisation.

English is the most widely spoken language in the world, (when you include people who speak it as a second language).
People who know English, make on average a $100 000 more over the course of a life time than the people who do not.
Most of the people who run business, who earn high salaries speak English. This has a lot to do with the fact that English speaking countries are some of the richest in the world, but also the people who are successful in non-English speaking countries, know English as well.

Not necessary for a career in food service or house keeping. But for those who aspire to not cook or clean for a living, English comes in pretty handy.

GLOBALISATION! of course! As the world becomes a more globalised international community, a universal langauge makes the foundation for communication. English facilitates this if you are in a high position and require some international ralations and network.

You are correct. Absolutely. Indubitably. Without a doubt. Communicate however you would like too. English, French, Spanish, ASL. As long as whoever is paying you to do what you do is willing to pay you go for it. However, your available options will be directly proportional to your ability to communicate. So, as long as you are comfortable with that, feel free to skip English class and smoke a joint. Employers love that.
