OK folks, I'm looking for the songs that reach right in and tear your heart from its place and make you want to bawl. I'm thinking of putting together a compilation album of melancholia - what do you think should be on it? Titles and artists are fine, but links to lyrics and/or downloadables would be extra fun. Any reasons why the songs especially get to you are also very welcome.

Oh man...broken hearted love songs don't really rip my heart out, they are sorta a dime a dozen. But, when someone writes and sings about the pain in their lives...it can move me to tears.

Tori Amos's "Me and a Gun" is a song written about when she was raped and she sings it with such whimsy and brutal honesty, I have a hard time hearing it, simply because it rips my heart out.

Lou Reed's entire album - "Magic and Loss" is about Lou dealing with the death of his two mentors and friends. And in my opinion it's one of the finest examples of not only a concept album, but what music should do...it should make you think, feel and tear at your heart and rip it right outta there.

Artist: Rascal Flatts
Album: What Hurts the Most
Title: What Hurts the Most

I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house, that don't bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I'm not afraid to cry
Every once in a while even though goin on with you gone still upsets me
There are days
Every now and again i pretend i'm okay but that's not what gets me

What hurts the most, was being so close
And having so much to say
And watchin you walk away
Never knowing, what could have been
And not seein that lovin you
Is what i was tryin to do

It's hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere i go
But i'm doin it
It's hard to force that smile when i see our old friends and i'm alone
Still harder gettin up, gettin dressed, livin with this regret

But i know if i could do it over
I would trade, give away all the words that i saved in my heart that i left unspoken

What hurts the most, is being so close
And having so much to say
And watchin you walk away
Never knowing, what could have been
And not seein that lovin you
Is what i was tryin to do

What hurts the most, was being so close
And having so much to say
And watchin you walk away
And never knowing, what could have been
And not seein that lovin you
Is what i was tryin to do

not seein that lovin you
that’s what I was tryin to do…

John Michael Montgomery The Little Girl. It gives me chills everytime i hear it and i cry
Her parents never took the young girl to church
Never spoke of His name
Never read her His word
Two non-believers walking lost in this world
Took their baby with them
What a sad little girl

Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs
Never wanted to play
Or give kisses and hugs
She'd watch the TV and sit there on the couch
While her mom fell asleep
And her daddy went out

And the drinking and the fighting
just got worse every night
Behind their couch she'd be hiding
Oh what a sad little life
And like it always does, the bad just got worse
With every slap and every curse
Until her daddy in a drunk rage one night
Used a gun on her mom and then took his life

And some people from the city took the girl far away
To a new mom and dad
And kisses and hugs everyday
Her first day of Sunday school the teacher walked in
And a small little girl
Stared a picture of Him

She said I know that man up there on that cross
I don't know His name
But I know He got off
He was there in my old house
and held me close to His side
As I hid there behind our couch
The night that my parents died

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton-makes me cry like a baby! The words and the way the music moves-not another song like it. It is also the tragedy behind the song-of him losing his child.
