They are passed down to us from our families, priests, teachers and other people who have influence over us as children, they are`rules` which have evolved throughout time, based on how each person should live their lives .They were based on `trial and error experienced by our ancestors understanding that it was
necessary to have a balance in our lives of both compassion and belief in the way we react with others. When we learn these things as children they are instilled in us and become a way of life for us.

God.

Or if you're an atheist its because we've evolved that way.
I don't think were very evolved at all, we do have values- principles of right and wrong- but we're more wrong than right: greedy, selfish, materialistic, proud, arrogant, ungrateful etc.

In the West people sometimes like to think we're more evolved because we've got the technology. In reality we're using our God given brains to come up with ever more effective killing machines- not very "civilised". And the reason we're so rich in the West is because we oppress the rest of the world and nick their resources
