I wanted to get a stackable but my Mom is telling me they do not work as well as normal washer and dryers. Gimme the skinny!!!

I've never heard that. I have a stackable because I live in a trailer and it does all right for me, but I'm not much of a dirty person (I get upset when I sweat!).

See if your mom can back this up with some hard facts, or try Consumer Reports.

Very good question! :)

Do you mean Stacked or Stackable. Stacked is all one unit. They are more expensive to service because all components are harder to get to. Stackable can be stacked or used side by side. The stackable will be a front load washer which holds quite a bit of clothes. When you buy a stacked unit both washer and dryer have to be replaced when only one is not worth repairing. If you do get a stacked unit I recommend the one made by Whirlpool. It has the same size motor, pump and transmission as the full size Whirlpool. I know of what I speak. appliance tech. 36 years

I have had both kinds of washers and dryers. I prefer floor models. Stackables are fine if you have small, light loads. I have found that the washers in stacking units are not as good in extracting the water as the floor types, so towels usually came out wetter.
If you get a stackable, get one with a front loading washer, they use less water, and are gentler on your clothes and get them cleaner. Without the center agitator, you can acutally fit a king-sized blanket in a stacking front load washer, something you cannot do otherwise.
Stackable dryers are generally electric, which costs you more energywise than gas.
Otherwise, they are perfectly servicable, just make sure you get one that will fit your load needs so you are not forever doing laundry.

They work just like any other washer and dryer but if there's room at all for regular size ones, that's what I'd choose. I like a larger washer so I can wash big stuff. I also like being able to replace just one unit if just one stops working. If you ever have to move a stackable unit around, it's a bit harder to do because of the height and balance issues from that. If clothes come out of the washer all twisted up, you shake them out a bit before putting them in the dryer, same as you'd do if they came out twisted from any washer.

They work as well, but only with a smaller capacity. The stackable I had and the others I've seen are just SOOO small!! I love to do laundry (sick, I know!) and the little stackables, in my opinion, will not do the job of a full size side by side set.....

I've used both, and would rather have the side-by-side ones. I hated having the stackables. If you are washing for a family they are a nightmare. Maybe not so bad for a single person, I don't know. You'll be happier with the others in the long run, trust me.

Stackable are usually smaller, but they work as well as side-by-side machines of the same size. They don't work any less well because they are stacked, but you are stuck with the smaller size.

Sigh,,, They are SEPARATES,,, in function. Stacking is a SPACE SAVING design. No offense to Mom. Certainly they don't appeal to everyone, nor are they always necessary, but I suggest you consider quality of product, in reputation or testimonials perhaps, as well as SPACE you can devote to the appliances.

Rev. Steven

With no real sarcasm intended I offer an analogy. My coffee maker sits atop my microwave. Both happen to be low end in price point but functionally suitable to me. Neither operates at the same time,,,usually, nor does the operation of one, affect that of the other.
