It's all down to personal preference. I am studying CIMA, which focuses more on management accounting and business studies whereas ACCA is more pure Accounting.

If you want to go into practice and become an accountant then ACCA is the one that you want.

If you want to work in industry with a good understanding of accounting and how the accounts affect business decisions then CIMA is probably the best.

I'd say it depends which bits of accounting you enjoy most or are best at.

ACCA seems to be acceptable by everyone. CIMA seems more industry accounting related. However both are recognised qualifications & will be welcome everywhere ...hence, which bit of accounts do you enjoy doing most?

AAT is at a much lower level .... to me, it seems to give more of a taster of what studying ACCA would be like.

By the way, I started to study CIMA - sadly, quite liked cost & managment accounting in preference to tax - but joined local government so ending up doing CIPFA. By the second year of my course, I was sufficiently qualified that, if I wished, I could pay to have AAT with no exams necessary.

I'd recommend, that, if undecided, start with AAT - it should give some exemptions for both CIMA & ACCA - & it will help you make up your mind about which bits you prefer doing & what you are best at. Good luck.

Which is better to study - ACCA or CIMA? And how different is AAT to either of these?
