Using Window 2000 NT / ASUS NVIDIA GeForce4 MX A7N8X motherboard - the CD unit that went bad is Samsung S350B DVD/CD R/W.

Samsung is listed in BIOS as not detected and does not shown in C-Drive.

Device Manager states code 31 needs driver and installed updated driver no change in Device Manager.

Replace with new unit ASUS S520B CD ROM same messages in BIOS and Device Manager.
In BIOS listed as not detected in Device Manager states code 31.

To add to the dilemma, mouse was bad and causing problems like disabling port LPT1 and maybe the causing the Samsung unit to be not detected.

There are many possibilities here:
- make sure the jumper settings are proper, never connect 2 master or 2 slaves on the same data cable
- BIOS settings could be bad or corrupt, try restoring the default ones, this may not give you optimal performance but will help finding the issue
- it could also be an addressing conflict, disconnect as many devices as possible (including add-on cards)
- your motherboard may be defective or have bad connections. To resolve motherboard issues it may be useful to take everything out of the computer onto a foam and test it there. This has helped me identify a lot of bad connections. If you notice that just slightly touching the main board causes weird things to happen, there is probably broken solderings and it should be replaced unless you are a real pro in PCB soldering.

Troubleshooting this:

(If it's an IDE device)

Unplug the mouse - we're not going to need it now.

Take any other device (optical drive, hdd, etc) off of the secondary IDE chain.

Check the jumper on the optical drive. It should be set to cable select or master. (see the instructions that came with the drive)

Check the cabling and power to the optical drive, and if you can replace the data cable with a known good one.

Power up the system and see if it's seen in the bios (you may have to change a setting in the bios to have it try and detect the drive again.)

If it's seen, then go from there.

If it's not:

Unplug the data cable from the hard drive and plug it in to the optical drive, then check to see if the drive is detected in bios. If it is, you're probably dealing with a bad drive, if not you may be dealing with a bad mother board. Remember to plug the data cable back into the HDD when you're done!

As for the mouse, do you have a different one you can try? Also, make sure you're pluging the mouse into the correct ps/2 port (if it's ps/2)

yeah, it's possible you've got an IRQ conflict - but it's also possible that you've got a bad controller on the system board - especially if you've gone through two different drives.

Also, is there a BIOS update for the ASUS board? Maybe that is what it needs - a flash BIOS update might just fix the damned thing!

Good luck!

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
