What is the exact part number of the breaker you are trying to use, and of the box if you can find it? If it doesn't fit, you obviously have the wrong breaker (or are possibly putting too many circuits in the panel...are the breakers in question tandems?). Cutler Hammer has 2 lines, CH and BR, that aren't even the same size. The BR is 1" breakers similar to other brands, the CH is a smaller breaker. Your breaker part number is something like CH115 for example.
In general, even if a breaker fits, it isn't a good idea to use one not rated for the panel (like a different brand). If a manufacturer makes breakers to fit other brands panels it is called a classified breaker.

RE:
Can someone help me with a Cutler Hammer breaker box question?
I need to add a few more breakers to the box, however, there is a bar that goes down the middle of the box that when I put in a replacement breaker, it won't fit because the bar prevents it from going in. I looked at the breakers currently in there and they have a notch in them. I can't...

If it is a style "MP" Murray panel, then American Switch, Westinghouse type br, Bryant, Challenger, Sylvania, Crousehinds, Murray, Frank Adams, Eaton/Cutler Hammer, General Electric (full size only), General Switch, Siemens, ITE, Gould, Montgomery Ward and Sears all make breakers that will fit.

short/simple answer here...but pricy
SWITCH OUT THAT CUTLET HAMMER BREAKER BOX FOR ANOTHER BRAND
Cutler Hammer breakers never tripped correctly...out of the 4 years working as an electrician I have seen outlets sparking which would trip any other breaker....but not the old Cutler Hammers
they are a real fire starter and if you have any money to put aside it STRONGLY suggest swapping out for a new panel.
It just makes since to me...why keep a fire starter in your home?
Square D home line is a great brand. They are the only panels I install now.

You need to get the part number from old breakers and buy the proper breaker. Each breaker with different AMP rating has a part number. Turn the power off before attempting to work on the panel. The power in a panel can kill in no time. It should be worked on by some one with proper training.

From the sound of it you have a new style CH breaker, you need to get the older style BR type breaker, Cutler Hammer changed their design about 5 yrs ago and went with the new CH style....Hope this helps

I actually for for Eaton Cutler Hammer. The bar was a rejection bar that prevented other manufacturer's breakers to go in. now we don't use that bar and our breakers aren't made to go in with the bar. However, all you need to do is cut that bar off. Some people don't like to do that so if you want you can get your electrician to do that. If you don't want to remove it... you need to get older breakers from an aftermarket distributor.
