I'm very fast - about 90 words a minute. Unfortunately I make so many mistakes! So if you're accurate, don't worry too much. Better to be accurate than type out page after page with lots of mistakes.

I believe the only way to improve your typing speed is to practice, practice, practice!! Try taking a course in typing that uses a typewriter without the keys identified. Meaning, no letters on the keys. They fastest typists do not look at the keys when they type. It also depends on the keyboard you are using. Not all keyboards are made the same. They space the keys differently, the number keys may be on the side or on the top or both. If you are testing your wpm, I would suggest you use the same keyboard as you are comfortable with it. Good luck! 50 wpm is an okay speed.

Practice practice practice.
Not a popular answer but it is honest and probably true.
I started two finger typing and then added additional fingers as I went along. The hardest transition was to lift my head up and stop looking at the keyboard. So....
If you practice answering lots of people's questions here you will eventually get faster. Keep it up! You can do it !!!

I know of a person who don't know how to type but own 50 horses and a very big business. You are spending your time focusing on the wrong thing.
Just to let you get the point deep into your head...or skull. It's like spending time to learn how you can polish the shiniest boot or making a table at Mcdonalds shine.

Honestly practice makes perfect. There are some speed typing techniques you can try to work on when it comes to practice including closing your eyes and typing this same sentence over and over again.
---------------------------------------------------------
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.
---------------------------------------------------------
People may have to type at their jobs but how much time in a day is actually spent typing? Unless you have a job such as data entry, it's not usually as much as you would think. So anyway my advice is to practice every single day, at least one hour a day and your accuracy and speed will improve over time.

if you touch type then you'll need to practice, I'm afraid. If you don't touch type then go on a course or get a free tutorial from the net.
