Really, think about times when you need one and did not have it. I think is is one of our more imperative contemporary tools that offer convience, entertainment, and a sense of security. What do you think?

Maybe you could use some statistics about the increase in cell phone use over the past decade to start your persuasive essay. Look for cell phone use statistics online and say something like, "Cell phone use has increased from ** million users in 1995 to ** users today"

What is your thesis statement? I teach 8th grade english, and the first thing I tell them is that before they can come up with the details they need a strong thesis? Is yours "everybody should have a cell phone?" If so then you need three strong supporting reasons. Each of those reasons should have 3 strong supporting details, which creates 3 paragraphs. Put an introductory paragraphy with an effective start (set a scene, use a quote, state a fact, ask a question, etc...) and your thesis in a paragraph before those paragraphs and another paragraph restating your thesis, giving additional info, and a closing statement to leave your reader with something to think about and you've got an excellent 5 paragrah essay. Here's the basic outline broken down:

Par 1:
Effective start
Additional Info
Thesis statement

Par 2:
Topic sentence supporting thesis 1
Supporting detail 1
Supporting detail 2
Supporting detail 3
Concl. Statement

Par 3:
Topic sentence supporting thesis 2
Supporting detail 1
Supporting detail 2
Supporting detail 3
Concl. Statement

Par 4:
Topic sentence supporting thesis 3
Supporting detail 1
Supporting detail 2
Supporting detail 3
Concl. Statement

Par 5:
Restate thesis (in different words)
Additional info
Closing (leave reader with something to think about)

Hope this helps!

"Over the past 5 years, the cell phone has become not only a technological tool, but an icon of the information age we live in today." ..then you can go from there, explaining why everyone should have a cell phone. (make it an imperative if you want and back them into a corner.)

"In a world where technology and communication is becoming more advanced by the day, the percentage of cell phone users has dramatically increased in the last decade. But is it really essential to be able to be reached by phone or to place a call 24 hours a day, seven days a week?" (or something along those lines) and then go on explaining the pros and cons about cell phones.

Personally, I think, a much more interesting essay would be "Life without a cell phone" or "the reason there is no need for a cell phone." Use history, different life styles, monastery or missionary life without them, an explanation of how people are able to function without one. The benefits of a simpler, slower paced lifestyle. How technical things like phones steal our peace and quiet or unnecessary interruptions are troublesome.

Writing a Persuasive Essay

In a persuasive essay you are going to try to convince the reader that your point of view is best. To accomplish this, you must chose a topic which is clear and to the point and one which has more than one side that can be debated. It is important that you understand the other sides of the position so that you can give strong reasons why your way is best. In your essay, you will only present one side.

Like all kinds of five paragraph essays, there is a specific format to be followed.

Definition: Persuasive writing works to convince the reader that a point of view is valid or persuades the reader to take specific action. It is based on a topic that is limited in scope, manageable, and debatable; a topic about which there could be more than one point of view.

One thing is you should make statements and avoid "I think" it's understood that this is your opinion so your objective is to show why. "I think" jerks the reader back to remembering that you're trying to sway their mind instead of losing themselves in how what you're saying makes sense. So just say "It is one of our more imperative...." Other than that I think you're off to a good start just don't forget to try and apply that it's everyone who needs a cellphone; the young, middle aged, and old not just young technologically advanced people. Good luck hope that helps some!

Yeah. Kids have busy lives, and some are borrowing cell phones from a lot of people. Well, that is probably an example.

There is much contreversy on the importance of cell phones in peoples' lives. (then go on to thesis i.e. Cell phones are an essential tool in peoples' everyday lives.)

You mean your opening sentence?

you see it on the news any day of the week now. 9/11, the amish school shooting, and the other in ((forgot where...where he killed that one girl in the classroom)). All these people were able to contact their loved ones with the use of their cell phones.
