Somewhere with a good health service which is accessible to you. Some of the popular retirement destinations (notably the Caribbean) don't have hospitals or don't have hospitals adequate for your needs and would have to air ambulance you to the United States if you became ill and your insurance premiums would have to be pretty hefty to cover that! You might even become uninsurable! That's why France and Spain are good choices.

I hear Mexico is a great place to retire; the cost of living is really cheap there, you can buy a good house for cheap, you could even hire folks to take care of the house for you or be a body guard/interpreter for you when you go out. I’d be a little leery of the Mexican government, though.
Of course, my parents are planning on building a house out in the boonies of mid-Oklahoma on a piece of land Dad inherited when his father died. Seems like a great place to live if you want to be secluded from the rest of the universe and never see another living sole for the duration of your retirement.
It really depends upon what you’re looking for.

Bournemouth is quiet with tree lined streets and pleasant parks. When I am there, I hanker for early retirement.
