We live in SW Missouri and found some really large acorns. We would like to grow them but I really don't know how. Any suggestions?

ok step by step ..here we go...

first:
take a fallen acorn from the ground
second:
take the lil hat off it cos that won't grow
third:
take a small tack and make a lil crack in the acorn
fourth:
put earth and potting soil in a planter
fifth:
poke your finger down in the soil mixture
sixth:
push acorn down deep in the hole you made with your finger
seventh:
cover soil over acorn
eight:
water
ninth:
place in window (unless its too cold where you live then keep the planter close to a heater vent up on a table)
tenth:
water ever other day or so and soon you will have a sapling
When large enuf plant outside!!!

Sooo THERE YA GO IN A NUT SHELL!!!!

Start with a small pot - add good quality potting mixture - place acorn fat side down into the dirt about 2/3 way up to acorn - water and keep it moist by covering with a baggie to trap moisture. It will take a while but it will grow. Since oaks are slow growers don't expect a big shade tree for several years.

I would like to add that I have 2 very large oaks in my backyard, and they drop acorns every year about this time. I always have "seedlings" pop up in the spring, either in my planters or in the flower beds. So that lets you know you don't need to do alot to make one grow. I did take 2 of them and transplant in my front yard. The 1 oak is about 12 feet tall and is 5 to 6 years old and the 2nd one is about 6 to 8 feet tall and is about 3 or 4 years old. I think the rate of growth is dependent on more than just the fact that is an oak. Remember to consider "where" you are going to plant this tree when you are ready to place it in the ground.

Oak Trees have very large and strong root systems. I suggest you do not plant the acorns near underground pipes or walls or too near to buildings. Their roots will distroy these eventually. Oak trees take ages to grow as well, but they are really of great beauty. Just pop the seed into fertile soil and water. Enjoy your tree in around 3 to 5 yrs and then it will only be around knee high, but very pretty I must say!!!

Plant the acorn and be careful with your lawnmower. This ain't rocket science.
