I am a translator and I need to know the actual meaning of 'throwing a fit' as mentioned in the following sentence:
Courtney Love threw a fit at a Sundance gathering when the wife of the Hollywood Reporter's chief film critic took her picture, Variety reported.

Got upset, made a scene. Usually used in context of kids "throwing a fit" meaning having a temper tantrum.

In that context, "threw a fit" means that the person
"became highly agitated" . This says that the person
may have started yelling, screaming, swinging their arms
about, running around in circles, pulling their hair, falling
on the floor - any or all of those things = throw a fit.
It is a similar kind of thing as when a person goes
into an epileptic (epilepsy) fit. (spelling???) not as bad
perhaps, but some similar factors. The person throwing the fit might fire several employees on the spot, etc.

Interesting expression.
Throw can be to stage an event, such as
"throw a party" which means to create a party. this is a usage of the word throw.
so throw a fit means to create a fit or have a fit.
the word "fit" is more difficult to explain as to how it came to mean "acting disturbed." but that is what it can mean.
Perhaps it evolved from the expression of "fitness" in a sense of health. to be "fit" means to be in good condition. ready for physical things.
to be unfit, one is not ready. they are poorly equiped to be physical. maybe fat or weak or lame. that is unfit.
if you move that meaning over into the mental realm you can be mentally unfit or fit.
mental patients have been known to act up and act wierd and this is called having a "fit" for some reason. That is when the nurses get out the straight jacket and put it on the patient.
But that does not explain it does it?
perhaps a "fit" of something can be a an "episode" or a "bout" of something. such as an epispode or ranting or a bout of the flu.
Like having an epileptic fit.
so a bout of bad behavior may be called a fit of bad behavior.
or possibly like:
"the dog had a fit of thirst"
So I that "having a fit" came to mean that a person was experiencing an episode of bad mental thoughts and expressing them. but to throw a fit means more like it is deliberate. more so than having a fit. a spoiled brat throws a fit. an epilepsy patient has a fit.

She had a major temper tantrum. She would have shouted, screamed, and probably cursed (swearing, using rude words & gestures) because someone took a picture of her without asking permission. Courtenay is well known for using foul language.
Famous people like to do things like that all the time. It keeps them in the news.

Babies "throw a fit" when they don't get what they want. When the photographer took a picutre she complained heartily, maybe yelled, knowing Courtney Love. Throwing a fit is basically having a tantrum. It connotes a little childishness and getting out of control.

From my 12th grade English Teacher Jeff Blakeslee, "This was a killer question & I must admit that I was stumped and asked for clarification from others English Nerds. In case you are interested in the answer that I found, it should have been OK for him/her to use the word "harder"; the only time English demands "more hard" is if it is hyphenated as in the example "hard-working." One would say "more hard-working" rather than "harder-working". Since this person's example is not a hyphenated (compound) word, it should have been OK. "Threw a fit" = "Got very mad and argumentative". The phrase has overtones of being unreasonable, and definitely involves making a scene.

Hi it means that she lost her temper and had a hissy fit,,,,,basically she freaked out and lost her cool, (acting like a baby)
