What the hell does America hope to gain out of all this? First we say that we wont tolerate a nuclear NK, but now it seems were content to simply make sure they dont sell them?

What exactly are these 'U.S. interests' that we are going after?

Ask the UN. They are the major hold up on all of this as usual. The UN is really good at tying the Americans hands on a lot of stuff. The UN which is a big buracracy likes to negotiate creating a lot of red tape because, there are so many countries involved and they all want to put theirwo cents in. Plus you have China who wants to turn the other cheek on the North Korean thing as opposed to doing something about it. So, what can the Americans do. Out interest is the usual protecting the rest of the World from tyrants like this Il Kim dude in NK. In fact I think the us Americans should stay the hell out of it. The rest of the world hates us anyway. Why should we help any of them? I say let the North Korean create a bomb. Let them drop it on Paris and see what happens then. Boy those French would be fuming. They would be saying "How come you Americans didn't help us??" And we will be like you didn't want us to help so, screw you. I hope this helps. Take care.

I don't suppose too many of you folks on this forum actually lived through the cold war. I did. We actually had bomb shelters in the subburban areas. There were school drills for what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. We know how bad a nuclear war could be back then. It would be even worse with todays technology. No one wants that, no the US, not Russia and not China and we certainly do not want any rouge mad man dictatorship to black mail the world with his finger on the button. We were lucky back then that while we had the cold war we mamage to put enough safe guard in to make sure no one gets up in the morning after a bad night and decided to end it all for mankind. Looking at the mentality of the folks at North Korea or Iran...what do you think?

1. NK does not sell nuclear arms to terrorists or enemy states. It has been selling arms including ballistic missiles to the likes of Iran, Iraq and Syria for years.
2. NK directly threatens Japan and South Korea, both US allies which the US has treaty obligations to defend (otherwise you may as well let Japan and South Korea develop nukes).
3. NK is a totalitarian regime that has embarked on terrorist activity against South Korean and Japanese targets in the past.

The US can't stop NK acquiring nuclear weapons, because it is armed to the teeth with conventional, biological and chemical weapons that could strike South Korea in minutes, killing thousands. The US can impose an embargo on trade and persuade China to support it, helping to starve the regime into submission.

The "interests" are keeping our nation safe. Our government can make a reasonable assumption that N.K. won't use nukes against America, because their country would be destroyed. If America can ensure that N.K. will not proliferate their weapons, then America has no problem, it can keep them in check, and the status quo is only slightly modified.

Governments serve in the interest of their people, not as a world policeman bent on being judge, jury, and executioner of people that someone may deem "bad" or "evil". If our goverment can preserve more life and property by negotiating with N.K. than by unilaterally forcing them to disarm, than it should take that route.
