Keep it clean. Keep your CDs and DVDs clean. Never touch the shiny side, where it reads from.

Buy a CD/DVD Drive cleaner. Clean CDs & DVDs that have gotten dirty. Use the CASE.

Do NOT use a CD or DVD label, since they peel and crack with age. Eventually a CD or DVD label will ruin your disk.

If you take care of it, It will take care of you.

Good luck

The lens for the laser might be dirty. Try using a can of compressed air to blow out some of the dust. There are lens cleaner discs that you can buy too.
If that doesn't work, then maybe the EIDE cable for it is faulty. Most of them are cheap junk. Turn off your computer and unplug the EIDE cable. Try straightening it out a bit and plug it back in snugly.

Software can conflict with one another.. So ask yourself what other programs have I installed lately?
You may need to do a Disk Cleanup..
and be sure you have all the boxes checked....
Defrafg your C drive or what ever is your main
harddrive... Make sure you have selected the C
Drive.... This is called a Disk Defragmenter...
Go to : Start... programs.. accessories... system tools..
Do this often...
