Dial-up services use your phone line and a modem. Your modem makes a phone call to the internet service provider's modems to connect, so you cannot talk on the phone while the internet is connected. Dial-up is one of the slowest types of service available, however it is one of the most readily available because it was designed to use basic services like the phone system that are already in place. Dial-up also requires you to connect every time you want to use it.
DSL services also use your phone line, but you can still get and place phone calls. DSL is much faster than dial-up, and you do not need to connect every time you want to use the internet; it is an always on service. DSL is relatively secure as well. You can have static or dynamic IP addresses. Static IP addresses are good for game and web servers because you keep the same address, whereas with dynamic IP addresses your address will change periodically.

Dsl Vs Dial Up

Dial-up runs through a phone line, and has very limited speed. It's called dial-up because the connection actually dials a phone number to connect to the internet, DSL is a digital subscriber link which means you get a direct and dedicated link for the internet. Dial-up top speed is 56k, divide that by 7 for your top download speed roughly. DSL can range from low 128k up to about 10m currently(10000k), divide these by 7 for the average download speed per second also. Dial up requires a modem specifically for the job, DSL also needed a modem but would usually come with the service.

Dial-up requires an analogue modem and uses the same freqencies on the phone line as a voice call and you cannot use dial-up and make/receive phone calls at the same time. DSL uses a different frequency so you can use the phone line for a normal phone call and DSL at the same time.

Dial-up will only give you about 56k bits per second, DSL between 512k bits per second and 8m bits per second (so at DSL is at least 10 times faster).

DSL is also described as "always on", in amy cases the amount of data you can download is set at a certain level ("capped"). For most folks this is fine but you can get un-capped services for a few pounds/dollars/euros more...

With dial-up you can get a toll-free service wherr you get so many minutes per month or you can pay-as-you-go. Dial-up is more about time on-linie than the amount of data you download.

Dial-up modems, due to the form of communication line has a very slow data rate that performs a maximum of 56Kbps (kilobits per second) where as DSL for of communication through coaxial allows faster data rates and higher performace that makes speeds as fast as 1.5Mbps (megabits per second).

So, all in all the data rate for DSL is 3 times faster than Dial-up and is worth every penny. Hope this helps.

Dial up is the slowest.
DSL says it's faster.

You must have a specific box from the company that provides the DSL internet service. (ISP).

Broadband is the fastest (usually fiberoptic service must be installed in your neighborhood - and cable companies and the telephone companies are competing for this).
You must have a specific box (bigger than the DSL one) and looks like a small tower with a small antennae for this.
I have broadband now because I could not get DSL, and it had problems with the email system that took us 3 months of working together to fix!!!!
I ask for specific credits when it does not work and they usually put it in writing because we work on solving problems.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a new digital technology that brings high bandwidth to homes and small to medium sized businesses (SMBs) over the ordinary copper telephone lines presently installed ar your homr or office. DSL technology is available in various flavors, collectively referred to as xDSL. It allows voice, video and data to be transmitted at very fast speeds, 20 or more times faster than standard 56K V.90 (or newer V.92) dialup modems and 10 times faster than ISDN.
Dialup Service Must dial up every time you want to connect to the Internet and possibility of busy signals.Must have additional phone line to surf the Internet and make phone calls or fax at the same time.

Dial up actually uses your telephone line and a modem to connect to an internet service provider. DSL (digital subscriber line) utilizes part of your telephone line to provide dedicated access to the internet and because of the hardware it employs, provides significantly higher speeds.

DSL service is limited by distance from the telephone companies Central Office (CO) which I believe is ~3miles.

DSL is vastly superior to dialup access.

dial-up goes through your phone lines. it ties up your phone while you are on the internet. it is typically cheaper and slower than DSL. DSL is direct satellite link. it goes either through your cable tv hookup or through your phone lines but not like dial-up. DSL is faster, more reliable and more costly than dial-up. it does not tie up your phone lines. you can still receive calls while you are on the internet. there are many different brands of dial-up. the two most popular brands of DSL are roadrunner from time warner cable and sbc/at&t yahoo.
