Get the Dell, here's why...
The specs and prices of the systems seem the same. But if you click through to read the actual specs of that Dell system, here are the differences:
CPU - you get a new Core 2 Duo CPU with the Dell, instead of the old, more power hungry, hotter, slower and less efficient Pentium D with the HP. The Core 2 Duo runs at a slower clock speed, but it's a MUCH better technology - and more future proof. It actually performs better than the higher clocked Pentium D.
Monitor - you get a 19" flat panel with the Dell, and only a 17" flat panel witht the HP.
Motherboard - without getting too technical, the Dell uses a much more up-to-date chipset which has more potential future proof benefits, support and efficiency.
I would personally trust Dell machines much more than HP, but I know what I'm doing with PCs and I'd be happy to work inside a Dell if I wanted to upgrade it or if something needed replacing or fixing. I wouldn't like to work inside an HP, they're nowhere near as well made.
I'm also confident that the Dell would be silent or very near - the HP might not be so quiet.
On the downside though, the Dell doesn't come with a multi-card reader for your camera/phone memory cards. This is an additional option for some money, but I think the processor and screen benefits FAR OUTWEIGH the HP for choice.
It seems clear the Dell is better value for money. If I were spending my own money, I would buy the Dell and I would happily recommend the same to my friends and family.
As for support (in response to the person above) the HP is an internet only offer anyway, so both computers are mail order options. The Dell is collect and return - so they'll pick it up and drop it back to you for 12 months. Even if you are able to get support for the HP at a local Toys R Us, they won't fix it in store. It will need sending away, and you'll still be without the computer either way.
On the plus side - each Dell comes with it's own part number which you can use on the Dell website to get support/download drivers/documentation etc. and the Dell online support is very good if you contact them. Phone them up and they're very helpful too in my experience.

don't buy dell if its a mail order because if sumthing goes wrong with it you have to send it away and wait weeks for it to return
