You could, but how could you transcribe the music so someone knows the tune to play?

no you cannot be a songwriter without been able to sing.this is so because when you are writing a song, you actually have a picture in mind how the song is going to flow when singing and then it means when writing you also sing along to have the feel of the song, but it is possible to be a songwriter and not be able to play a musical instrument.

Not be able to sing will not be a hinderance but to be able to write songs you are going to need a musical education or a good understanding of music and learning to play an instrument would be a good way to get that.
My suggestion is to learn the piano, then you can get a keyboard and use the different synthesized instruments to create arrangements.

Bob Dylan was in a genre that fitted his guitar playing. It's called folk.
Now that i've said that, yes, it is definately possible. You need look no further than bernie taupin for inspiration. One of the greatest songwriters of all time. Mind you, he wouldn't have done it without Elton's music.

Yes, but to do so successfully, most lyricists develop a long standing working relationship with a musician. Bernie Taupin writes all of the lyrics you hear in Elton John's music.

You could'nt do any worse than most of them in the charts. The majority can't sing or play instruments. Many moons ago i heard a phrase which was "If you can't sing or dance wear a big hat" but none of them do.

Yes. There's lots of cr*p out there by such people. Joking. Many lyricists put words to someone else's music. Not all musicians have a way with words.

Reciting a poem out loud could technically be described as an acapella rap - so there's your song!

Why not? You write the lyrics, someone else takes over with a tune (or you work on it together)...and then someone else sings it...like Taylor Hicks. :)
