My husband tried to open a message on myspace from some "Adult" website (I know, don't say anything about it. I'm already mad as it its) and now I have www.safeiepage.com as my home page and I can't search or do anything on the internet. Also, once in a while a local porno site pops up (I can't have my kids around to try and fix this). I tried to reset my homepage back to yahoo through my control panel, but nothing happened. I tried everything to get this thing off of my computer...I've run my MacAfee and even downloaded something from MicroSoft to find the problem, but it says nothing is infected and can't find any virus. I'm not the smartest peron when it comes to computers so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay I downloaded the windows defender and it found nothing. I didn't really know what I was doing, but I clicked on Tools while on Internet Explorer, then went to Manage Add-ons and disabled a couple of things that I didn't give permission to publish and then I re-started my computer and ta-da it worked.

Honestly, I don't know how I did it and I hope I didn't screw anything up, but it worked.

Also, for the person who asked how did I get on the internet...I could get on the internet, but couldn't get to yahoo.com as my home page and I couldn't just type in a website because it woudn't accept it. I did have the yahoo (icon) on my tool bar that allowed me to sign in where I logged on to Yahoo Answers for help.

Turn off system restore before performing the steps mentioned below

to turn off system right click My Computer -> Properties

in properties window click the System restore tab and turn it off

Then see if you have the Yahoo toolbar installed, if it is and it is not showing in Internet Explorer the go to View -> Toolbars -> Yahoo
and then on the Y! toolbar use the antispyware provided it will start checking for updates and all and take sometime depending on your connection.

the begin the scan

and remove all spyware adware it finds

and then download the following programs (these are free and reliable)

Ad-Aware SE Personal from www.lavasoft.com
Spybot Search & Destroy from ... google for it ok :D
then SmitRem program, google for it also
and last one ewido anti malware

then update these software and reboot in safe mode

and run the scan using these programs and delete all that it finds

this whole process will take about 1-2 hrs to come through
It is better to have a computer literate person with you while you carry out these steps.

:)

If you have WIndows XP: First thing I would do is a System Restore and put your pc back to a state it was in prior to the problem. You do this from [Start]->[Programs]->[Accessories]-[System Tools]-[System Restore].

It'll show you a calendar and you can pick a date that was prior to the issue. It should undo the home page problem.

Often nowadays, Internet Explorer is affected by "adware" or "spyware" which is not technically a virus (so won't be detected by anti-virus software) but can be just as annoying.

Try using a spyware removal program like the free one from Adware:

You also may try SpyBot or Ad-Aware, they have both done me good as a System Administrator when trying to remove "unitentional" software...

Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoft.de
Click on the link to download Ad-Aware SE Personal

Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Click on the download link, scroll down to find the link for Spybot-Search and Destroy 1.4

I wrote this guide for people like you. But if you install Windows Defender (XP only) it will fix the problem. But you need to do all the steps to prevent this from happening again.

On a Mac, shift/control/3 takes a picture of the screen. If you press shift/control/4, you can click and drag over the area you want; the picture is taken when you release the mouse button.

Other spyware programs you can try are:

Ad-aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ (home version is free)
spyware blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (again free)

Again as it's been said already, it looks like you've been infected with spyware/malware (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/s/spyware.html) and not a virus (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/v/virus.html).

Hope this helps
