Go to Help>about internet explorer
if you have version 6.0 you can upgrade to version 7.0 but be aware that it's interface has changed and it may take some getting used to
here's an image of what IE7 looks like; note that the menu is not displayed by default

Most definitely update - although I personally recommend using either Firefox or Opera as your primary browser (most virus's and so forth are designed to terget Internet Explorer), the new version of IE is not simply an upgrade to your browser.
Internet Explorer is so tightly integrated into windows that it is a part of just about every window you open (even the old "my documents") - which means all the bugs inherent to IE are also well and truly built into your system along with the browser.
Think of it this way - IE7 is not just an update to your browser - even if you never use it, it still acts as a MASSIVE security upgrade for your PC ingeneral

First open Internet Explorer.
Click on the "Help" menu at the top and choose "About Internet Explorer"
In the first line under the logo, you should see "Version ...." which will give you the version.
Microsoft will always tell you to use the latest version as they have fixed some known security issues etc. but if you're happy with what you've got - why bother changing??

Go to Help - About Internet Explorer. And I don't think you should upgrade because the new version is still full of bugs.

Open Internet Explorer in main menu choose Help-->About Internet Explorer.
It is not necessary to update to the latest version, but it is advisable.
P.S. I prefer Opera and recommend it to you ;-)

Help > About ... but I'll bet $20 you have IE6 as it's been out for 5+yrs!
Yes you should upgrade to IE7, it's a massive security overhaul to IE and Windows and pretty much cripples most spyware/viruses. It may take a little getting use to because it looks different, but it's easier to use once you do.
