i believe that you would have checked in My Computer and double click on your cdrom drive letter... ?
And nothing happened?

Is there any light blinking or lighted when you place the cd in it?
If there is not sound/action/changes when you put in the CD, then yah, you'll need to try and install another cdrom drive to test

but before that, just go to Control Panel-->System-->Hardware-->Device Manager and click on "+" beside Disk Drives
Make sure your CD Rom brand/name is stated there.
Right Click-->Properties, and make sure it states that the device is working properly.

If ok, try to play a normal music CD, just to analyze the problem further.

I take it that you mean the cd-rom drive is not picking up your cd's
Check the following-:
boot up your cd and check your bootup screen to see if it picks up your cd-rom drive.
Go to start, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, click on the dvd /cd-rom drives. select your cd-rom drive and double click on it., It will say if it working ok. If it is not try clicking on the driver tab and updating your driver.

If it does not show the cd-rom in the device manager check your connections to and from the cd-rom and pc

Your CD lens might be dirty, try cleaning the CD drive with a CD lens cleaner.

^^ In case of "no idea":
The CD is a kind that your compy isn't fit to read.
There is something wrong with the disk.
There is something wrong with windows. Try Windows Help.

Does it sound like its trying to run it or is it not even trying to spin? If that's the case then sounds like its buggered and you need a new one i'm afraid.

if it is spinning trying to read it and its not picking them up i have no idea!
