Friendly and strict...these notions are very subjective, and they have to do with the personality of the teacher. I think that what is most important for a teacher is to be competent in the field taught. That is the first criterion, without which you cannot be a good teacher, whatever your personality. And secondly, you must be willing to transmit what you know, because you think that your students should have the chance of receiving the knowledge that you were given. So, once you have those two criteria, the personality counts less. Some friendly teachers are good, some strict ones are good too. A teacher must find a balance between the two: be friendly but not lax, be strict and rigorous, but not rigid and narrow-minded.

Both! I think a teacher should help a student and be very strict. Friendly makes the student want to do the work. My son hates his teacher because she is strict and not friendly at all! But last year he loved that teacher because she was very friendly and also strict. She made sure she done his homework and was there for him when he needed someone to talk to. I think that is important. I am currently in college English and my teacher is strict and not friendly. I wouldn't ask her for help at all, Because she's not friendly. So in the long run it pays to be both!

Its not how students want their teachers to be . Instead, it's HOW TEACHERS SHOULD BE.
A good teacher :-
1. Should be able to judge the type of student.
2. Should be easy enough to communicate.
3. Should be vigilant that the student is not making a fool or him and wasting his study time, and be strict when necessary.
4. Strictness should never be in the form of corporal punishment. Nothing should be done to demoralize the student. Instead, he / she should be counselled when alone. Few kind and understanding words can have a far longer lasting effect than a slap / abuse.
5. Should be able to bring the best out of the student.
6. Should understand the problems of students at HOME for which at times students behave badly, and should be able to advice properly.
7. Should always respect privacy of the student and TREAT HIM / HER WITH RESPECT. Remember, a student deserves as much respect from the teacher as a person, as a teacher does. YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE.
8. Should teach values by practising them himself, not just by saying verbally.

Student would like to have a teacher who is first of all learned. Teachers must give the impression that they are capable and can meet the curiosity of their students and present facts in such a manner that it becomes understandable to the students. They are supposed to dispel the doubts and clarify the mist in the minds of students. In doing so they can give interesting examples so that subject becomes unforgettable and digestible. While dealing with students a teacher must be benign yet firm enough to be able to inject right feelings. A teacher should be dignified in the sense that he should not ask personal questions and pass remarks that are not academic. He should not look down upon those that are weak at studies. On the other hand he should encourage his students to do better in the exam and other fields.A teacher must be able to leave a healthy imprint on the minds so that in moments of depression he can serve as a model of inspiration.

I think it depends on the age of the students. In junior high/high school, teachers need to be strict. Same way with some college students. I have seen the same professor--be a blast with one class and very strict with the next.

teachers should be bit strict but they should not give thm any corporal punishment and should try to express themselves with their eyes. as punishment gives nothing except spoiling the child. and should be friendly upto this extent that student must feel free to discuss their problems with teacher. acc. to student teacher is the only source who can help him in a best probable way.
also strictness makes the child more stubburn and rude and some times uncivilized. child has hidden potential and it is the duty of teahcer to explore that potential and only friendly teahcer can do so. also days are gone when it is said that spare the rod and spoil the child. basically you can spoil with rod. so be friendly. but do tell student to deal with life very intelligenetly as they are like clean slate and whatever will be written in the tender age will become a blue print for him for the whole life

Teachers who taught things in a friendly and humerous way are always better liked than a teacher who is totally strict.

Depends. They will say friendly but their behavior will say strict. They mentally want a good open relationship with trust, which to them means friend. Emotionally and behavior wise subconciously want strict because there is less variation and therefore less stess to do change and new situations. For a teenager their whole life is about change and new situations.
