I need to power something that needs 20amp 120V. Also, can I do this on an outlet that says GFCI protected?

I need to power an appliance requiring 20 amp 120 V from a specific outlet in my home.
Adding: I found that the circuit switch that controls the outlet is marked "20 SWD" and it is a GFCI protected outlet.
Does this sound like the outlet is adequate?

Thanks!

most areas are 15A, kitchen and dining room are normally 20, houses with a drier outlet will be hooked to a 2 poll (220V) 30A circuit and the biggest breaker i have is a 2poll 50A for the welder i just installed last year.

GFCI outlets are meant for wet locations...outside, bathrooms, counter outlets.

they will allow the same amount of 20A as the other 20A outlets around the house do....they are just a little safer for the wet locations.

so yea in short that outlet you found the breaker for should work....that's assuming theres not something else on that same circuit at a different outlet pulling close to the 20 amps already....if so you will trip that breaker at some point and then will have to reset and find a new location.

BTW, what are you powering?

the amps come from the size of fuse or circuit breaker in system the voltage is normaly 120 on a 3 wire plug in at least12/3 wire.the size of wire makes a difference weather it will carry 20 amps. a GFCI plug in is protected so you cannot get shocked it will act like a cuircut breaker if it is not rated for 20 amps

In the US the typical outlet is 15amp 120volts, and yes you can use a gfci outlet, but most gfci's are 20amp for Kitchens, Bathrooms, outside, and garage outlets, If you can give more info it would be helpful.

look at your circuit braked box, they are marked with their amp rating, 20 amp at 120 volts is pretty standard in modern homes
