But if you said Bell now I would say John Bell my great grandfather whose mother died when he was aged 1 and his father when he was 6. He was then placed in the workhouse. He ran away aged 11 and stowed away on a foreign ship. He then became a seaman till he was aged 38.

He was born in South Shield Durham in 1874 and died in Newport 1952.

How many 11 year olds would fair today
