why is the direction of electric current taken opposite to the direction of flow of electrons?

i have often seen that the people answer this question by saying that it is convention .but how did this convention originate?

This originated because in the past people thought current travelled from the positive to the negative terminal, but later further research proved that it wasn't the current that flowed but the electrons that moved.

Later,..... much later...When the concept of Electrons came about, being negatively charged particles, the electrons naturally were repelled from the (-) terminal of the battery and attracted towards the positive terminal. Hence the flow was now away from the (-) and IN to the (+) terminal!
