I think that it has to do with time travel and different plains of time where the characters have lived and their lives have crossed.
BTW, the purgatory theory has long been eliminated by the creators and writers. They have explained on the Lost websites. And, the government conspiracy is hopeful, but, way too easy for the writers!

I think it is all a psychological experiment. For a while DHARMA was doing their thing, and then they left. But the didn't tell the subjects. So for years, things have been getting out of hand. I think the Others like it enough that they are the ones in control. So they just stay there.

The final show, and hopefully it will come soon, will have one of the main characters waking up on the plane and finding out it was all a bad dream.

The show is long past preposterous. I stopped watching last year. Jericho is going down the same road. Stopped that one too.

I think they're all dead and this is some weird purgatory like thing.
