You can have both. Be modest early in your life (live with no debt) and invest money.
Find ways to increase your income.
Later in life, you could have a ton of money to spend, save and give away.

Save your money, live a modest life, spend and live a full life.
Balance, a little of everything.

saving money and live a modest life is better, you can have a full life and be just as happy spending less. Saving for a rainy day is always worth it. Money cannot buy happiness.

Theses days those who have saved in the past and led a modest life are the ones penalised in later life when it comes to state aid. Those who frittered it all away on a good time seem to get it all handed to them on a plate by government when they retire.

If you save wisely, you actually have more money to spend. This is because savings generate further income while getting into debt requires you to pay interest to the lender which reduces your net income.
Those who live on credit cards etc. are innocent souls, who fool themselves. But I hope they carry on doing it as have a lot of bank shares.

It depends upon the personality and character of the individual. It would be great to spend every nickel and not worry about tomorrow.... if we only knew exactly what our future needs were going to be and when we would expire. Too many people live that way and find themselves miserable in their "golden years". It's people like that who complain that the government needs to help them....
