I was thinking last night as Greystoke was on TV that they're both very similar in their concept, and they both originate from the same era. So I wonder which was written first, and if the other was in some way inspired by it?

The Jungle Book 1894 came first. Kipling did most of his writing in India while Burroughs did most of his work in England. Tarzan was first serialized in 1912. It seems to me that since the Jungle Book was based on characters and creatures from India while Tarzan was set in Africa that their is no relation between the two works.

According to Wikipeida: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jungle_Book
"The Jungle Book was written in 1894 by Rudyard Kipling."

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarzan
"Tarzan, a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first appeared in the 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes, and then in twenty-three sequels."

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greystoke_-_The_Legend_of_Tarzan%2C_Lord_of_the_Apes
"Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is a 1984 film directed by Hugh Hudson and based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel Tarzan of the Apes."

Television is produced to the cheapest common denominator - i.e., the common IQ of the general public, whereas a written e book is written to the highest common denominator
