I'm looking to go back into dancing and gymnastics, but every time I point my toes for more than one second, I get terrible cramps in my feet. Is there a reason for this, and can I correct it? (I'm a little over weight if that would contribute...)

Warm your feet up very well before pointing them. Do a lot of half-pointing exersises to get the muscles working again. Concider wearing legwarmer for the exersise. Take potassium and calcium vitamins.
Point your foot using the arch muscles, not from the toe. Relax your toes when pointing.

It used to happen to me before.

This is totally normal, most people get a certain sensation in their feet when pointing their toes in that position..If you go to an Osteopath or Physiotheropist they should be able to help you with some excersizes which will soon kill the pain. Good luck with the gymnastics!

weight has nothing 2 do w/ it, its typically called arch cramps. its very common 4 dancers, especially pointe dancers. really the only way 2 get over it is 2 keep practicing (it will go away soon enough!) 1 good way 2 help get rid of the cramp when u have it is 2 roll yr foot over a tannis ball (or if yr in dance rub yr foot over the end/bottom of the barre

Try eating some bananas the are supposed to help feet and leg cramps. Might be low on potassium.

I have the same thing! Specially when my feet are cold.
I think you can train your feet so this doesn't happen. Pick up a pencil on the floor with your toes, make big circles with your toes while your heels are at the floor etc.
Good luck!

Well I take dance lessons and we sit on the floor and point then flex our toes and also roll them in a circle i guess its so that we dont sprain our toes or something like that......hopefully that helps....

My doctor recommended potassium (eat foods with potassium, don't take supplements) and water. Most people are at least a little dehydrated, and that can cause cramps.

make sure u dont have flat feet (lacking the complete arc).hence if u have no arc ur feet from the button are stretched ,having no muscular arc to support ur weight.that might be causing the cramps.

I don't know how to prevent it, but when it does happen, grab your foot and pull your toes towards you...it relieves you of the pain quicker.
