My worst clothing nightmare has finally come true - I've been invited to a Christmas black tie party where the guys have to wear smart suits and us girlies have to wear a cocktail dress or ball gown. My problem is I don't possess a dress or skirt in any form and have no desire to either. The friend who has organised this party said for me to wear something that I would wear to a prom or wedding....problem is I have one outfit which services all occasions from funerals to Bar mitzvahs so its not appropriate for this festive occasion. I normally manage to get out of going to events like this but I'm beginning to think I'm actually going to have to got through with this one. Rubbish.

Do not wear a pantsuit to this occasion. You will most likely feel silly and inappropriately dressed compared to all of the other women present if you do.

As I see it, you have two choices: either politely decline the invitation (though I see no good reason why you should) or find something appropriate to wear. You can either rent an outfit, go to eBay, an antique store to find something vintage, borrow something from a friend or family member, or buy one outfit that you can wear again and again if invites like this one pop up in the future.

There are a ton of nice things at Neiman-Marcus:

I also like J. Peterman's stuff. I own the Beautiful Geometry skirt, and the fabric (cotton, if you can believe it!) rustles and has a beautiful sheen (wear a fitted, shiny or spangly top if you go this route). The Belle Époque skirt is also gorgeous, and one of the dressier velvet skirts would also be great:

Good luck!

For a black tie party you could wear a "palatzo" pants suit - soft, flowing pants in black with a killer corset - heavy on the lace, in a different colour, such as purple or emerald green, if the colours suit you. Girls do not have to wear a skirt to go to the ball...

http://www.shopdress.com/Categories.bok?category=Cocktail+Dresses has many dresses to choose from, and even pants suits that will look sofisticated yet be comfortable. If you google "evening wear" you will find loads more sites, and probably a few near you, wherever that is.

Good luck and remember - Not every Cinderella wears a dress!

I dont know why you dont like dresses, and by saying that I mean what it is about them. I dont like to get dressed up either, it seems like a waste of time. Like you have to see someone in a dressy out fit that makes them better? They are still the same person you see every day. However I will say that instead of going like a guy in a tux, go buy a nice pant suit. They make pant suits for women that are dressy and look nice so you dont have to put on the dress. If you go to Pennys or Dillards or Sears or some other department stores they are next to or around the prom dresses. Sorry about your luck but Good luck finding something!

Your best bet might be to go for a flattering un-glitzy coctail dress that isn't so unique that it will be remembered every time you wear it.....Simple and classic design can be dressed up or down with accessories or a jacket can change it from a party mode to a more business or conservative look. Choose a favorite color that is becoming on you. It will be a good investment and doesn't have to cost that much! Thrift stores and consignment shops are good sources for these clothes as they never get worn enough to show and the quality of most these garments are very good. Stand as tall as possible and breathe deeply! Above all else; RELAX, SMILE, and you may even enjoy yourself!

Just get a dress and go. You might have fun. And then for either this year or next year plan a Halloween party where all the girls wear a tux and the guys wear a dress.

I hate the pressure of wearing a certain thing so I know what you mean but, if you really want to go to the party, I think you should wear something which helps you blend in.

You never know - you might try something on and love yourself in it.

I don't wear trousers because I look worse in them than skirts so I'd hate to go to a compulsory trouser wearing party, but the bottom line is you'll probably look better than you think.

you can buy some nice dresses from charity shops. won't break the bank and you can bin it afterwards if you really hate wearing it. TK max also do beautiful new dresses for about £35. you will probably have a brilliant time cos the nights out we dread tend to turn out the best nights ever. have fun.

Why not hire an outfit from a wedding shop, then you don't need to go to the full expense of purchasing it and making sure you get your moneys worth.

Or, have alook on ebay you could probably pick something up rather cheap.

Good luck ;-)
