The opera is pretty formal.
Men usually wear a tux, women wear a nice cocktail dress. Have fun!!

those days something would properly be worn to the opera, unhappy as that's. A tux on a guy is, of direction, consistently desirable and amazingly warm, yet is frequently overkill those days. i've got consistently long gone to the opera in the two a tournament (organisation dresses) or khaki pants with a blazer. an incredible sweater over some slacks is fairly effective besides. As for women, a gown is frequently so as, nevertheless you need no longer fairly get too formal. think of semi-formal. And oh bloody hell. If that's the Phantom of the Opera, first of all, that's not an opera. Secondly, you are able to tremendously lots placed on something you decide on. Thongs are probable a no-no, yet Broadway shows are frequently lots looser approximately dresses than real opera.

It depends on the status of the opera company. The more famous the company the more dressy the audience.
Definitely at least a suit for the main opera companies, and if Covent Garden probably evening dress.
Once you're away from the big companies you can wear pretty much whatever you want.
One of Operas reasons for being seen as snobby is peoples concern over the "proper" way to do things. In other countries such as Italy, apart perhaps from La Scala, Milan, they see opera in roughly the same way we see cinema. They are much more relaxed, it's a much more social occasion, and they don't mind getting involved on a bit of audience participation.

Dress up if you want to play the game. If you don't the just wear whatever you want to wear. It's this kind of thing that gives opera a bad name. I'm pleased to have been in an opera for the English National Opera where leather wearers outnumbered the suits on the first night.

The correct attire for a man will be a suit not necessarily with a tie but it can be an open collar and the woman should wear a smart dress either long or short and should carry some sort of bag. Don't let anyone tell you that going to teh opera is not a posh affair. Of course you will always get the louts who don't know good from bad but don't take your cue from them. They are just losers.

When I went to the Met, I'd been walking around NYC all day and I didn't have time to go change my clothes. I wore a white button-down shirt with flowers on it and khaki corderoy pants. I didn't feel out of place at all.
Some people dress to the hilt when going to the opera: tuxes, formal gowns. But pretty much anything but a tee shirt and jeans would be appropriate. It's all about what you feel comfortable wearing around other people who may or may not be dressed up like it's the prom.

I would call the opera house and see if there are suggestions on dress. Most houses are formal, but some have toned it down. A good rule of thumb is.. the more expensive the ticket, the more dressed up you should be.

Depends if you are a man or a woman? Depends what sort of opera and where it is being performed? Depends what sort of seats you have or maybe a box?
Most women would wear an evening dress and most men would wear a suit or dinner jacket.

We have season tickets at the Metropolitan Opera (NYC/Lincoln Center) - and I *always* wear jeans, shirt and jacket. Unless somebody dies, I'm not putting on a suit - and I certainly wouldn't do it and expect to enjoy myself. Nobody has looked at us twice.
There are people in everything from full evening dress to people in torn jeans and tee-shirts.
Probably in a small town, people who go to the opera are probably more pretentious and they get dressed up more than people in the big cities.
