You need a Masters of Library Science. Most libraries specify this in their job advertisements. Check out the American Library Association's website (www.ala.org) and it has a list of schools offering this program. There are a lot of job opportunities in this field, especially if you have computer knowledge.

It depends on where you are and where you want to work.

If you want to work in a school library you need a teaching degree... or you should at least be in pursuit of one.

If you are looking to work at a public library, you may not need a degree if you have enough experience. Although, a degree of some sort would obviously boost your value as a prospective employee.

Library science would be what you'd seek a degree in, ideally.

I think you need a bachelor's minimum to be a librarian. Maybe something in Literary Science or just Literature. I know, I heard this before on y!answers and thought..."Wow, you need a degree to stamp and check out books and put them away?" I know books are a great value to our community, but so are children, and it does baffle me that you don't need a degree to be a mother.

Depends on the library. For the bigger ones you need an MLS. The good news is if you have an MLS you usually also qualifiy for work as an archivist or the registrar of a historical collection or even in some cases an art registrar. Good luck.
