The tools needed are a test stone, a set of test needles and a bottle of nitric acid. You rub your jewelry on the stone to leave a mark...then rub the 22k test needle on the stone...the colors should match...then you spread a small amount of acid across both marks , they should react the same. If your piece is lower karat it will disolve faster. The simplest way is have your jeweler do the test while you watch.

susieq is perfectly right, of course. I remember watching our local bullion dealer doing this very thing with any unstamped pieces when I went to him every few months to sell the accumulation of scrap gold from my Dad's purchases in various secondhand markets and shops around where we lived.

An accurate density measurement would be a close guide, but not exact. The specific gravity is 19.32 for 24 karat gold and approximately 18.45 to 18.6 for 22 karat, depending on which metal has been used for the 2 karats of non-gold.

submit a sample to a testing lab to run through a mass spectrograph.

If it was pure gold, you could do what archemedes did and check the density.
