Interesting Q, and one that recalled a trip to Scotland. I happen to be a contractor in the USA, and here we don't use the word "joiner" but that became my nickname while there,,,smiles.
I'll assume that while the UK may have "brands" specific to it, or Europe, it's also possible that brands sold here are international,,,IE: DeWalt. AND can easily be found especially on auction sites.
If this is just a poll then I personally suggest in specific price ranges they are all similar, and WE as a species choose for many reasons,,, perhaps the same as we'd choose chocolate cake over lemon?
I happen to use many,,, DeWalt, Ryobi,Skil, B&D, Porter, Milwaukee, etc. and for a general DIY person, I suggest stay in a price range one can afford, but with features, warrantees, service ability, and ease of operation. I also suggest shying away from off brands, such as "Chicago",,,no real offense meant. If one is rarely or never again use a cordless tool for example, then it might be sane to "rent" one, or spend money on one as if it might become disposable at some point.

We in Canada as in USA are brothers in "The Carpenter and Joiners Union", I like steven w's answer but I would ponder why in the States it's "penny nails" and not "inches" as in Canada, what is it in Scotland? We are supposed to call for the metric but, nobody in the trade seems to, it' still a spike for a 3 1/2" ardox nail or "clous" if you will.....
you never specified powered or manual, I like Porter Cable, but find different preferences or brands per application...

hand saw ? Something like a 21inch Spear and jackson will do fine for general contracting.
What would make me change ? Availalbilty at the right price. It would have to be in the builders mechants next time I wanted a saw. I wouldn't wait or order one specifically.
Tenor, veneer and power saws are a different story. You'll have to be more specific in your question to warrant putting more time into the answer.
So, to be sucessful, distribution is your answer.
