It will cover less than 1/3 the border. Border patrol agents will be chasing every coyote and rabbit that runs into the fence.
This is "feel good" legislation, designed to dupe people into thinking that something is being done.
The reason they are not really addressing the border situation is drugs. The southern border is the primary route for cheap street drugs. A real effort at closing the border means higher prices for drugs, which will lead directly to street crime. The reason street crime is so low is the easy access to cheap drugs. In the 70s and early 80's drugs were expensive and the government really made an effort at stopping them. Street crime was at outrageous levels. People were afraid, especially in the major urban centers.
But they "war on drugs" became a show piece and the cheap drugs started flowing in unabated. With that street crime decreased and Americans aren't afraid to walk the city streets anymore. Close the border up tight and every city will look like Baghdad in two months.
The economy also comes into play as a major factor. The nation cannot afford a 100% drop in illegal workers and the tax revenues collected from them.

Maybe it would help discourage future crossings, but what about all of the illegal immigrants that are here now?
I say America Companies should build factories over the border in Mexico to provide jobs, instead of sending their jobs to China, Taiwan, (any far foreign country).
Provide jobs in their own country to take them home. It would improve income to Mexico, Reduce shipping costs for any corporation that is willing to do it. I'm sure tax incentives would be offered to any corporation willing to do this.
New, better residential communities could be built for the workers.
I know others could elaborate on this Idea.
But who will do the jobs they do when they go back home?
The young Americans that did these jobs in the past no long would do them.
There is always fining the Employer should they be caught using illegals from any country.
It is a monster challenge. They just need to be legalized.
And legally pay for the benefits they use here.

It's about time President Bush signs that bill. I agree, make it electric. Nothing like a good zap to the bones to anyone who tries to climb it. I can see it now Mexico will win the gold in the pole vault event at the next Olympics! LOL
Or the illegals will come up with some sort of sling shot system to shoot themselves over the fence! HAHA I can see it now!

It's a great idea. However, I believe that President Bush only requested 350 miles of fence and the majority voted to increase that. For the people that disagree with this, do you have a fence on your own property? Why or why not?

It is a good thing, but not enough. I think our President has done a great job considering the circumstances of his Presidency. Let’s not forget, we were attacked first.
Also, as much as I hate to believe it, this is also just a political ploy.
No politician in this country will ever make the right decision on this issue because they are afraid of losing votes. If they only opened their eyes to realize that illegals are NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ALLOWED TO VOTE. So why pander to them?
Punish employers who hire them, HARSHLY. They will stop coming when there is no work available.
Create a National ID card. (social security cards & Drivers licenses were not initially meant to be used for this)
Stop allowing Sanctuary cities (Denver, San Diego, LA) that cut the illegals lose as soon as they find them.
Very frustrating…

I like it but I think a better idea would be to annex mexico and make it a part of the USA so everyone can share the wealth, pay the taxes and enjoy the beaurocracy. Then the US will own the oil and minerals and other natural resources and everyone can work harder in a bigger country probably for less.

It does`nt go far enough. My suggestion would be to build a 2 mile thick, 4 mile high reinforced concrete wall around the entire USA. Totally leak proof, making the US a huge tub. Then fill it with sulphuric acid. END OF PROBLEM.

I think it is a lood idea. Make sure the foundations of the wall go real deep and make it a double wall. The be sure to wire it with vibration sensors and cameras. Did I mention the landmines?
